24 March 2026How to fit 1959–2000 Mini lower engine mounts at home
11 May 2026On a Classic Mini or Moke the lower engine mounts do more than just “hold the engine in.” They’re a big part of how the car feels: idle vibration through the body, driveline shunt, gearshift feel, and even how well the engine stays put under hard acceleration, engine braking, and cornering.
The manual-gearbox mounting used across Classic Minis and Mokes is the 21A1902 style mount (two required per vehicle). It’s used across all manual gearbox Minis (from 1959–2000 manual models), while automatic gearbox cars use different engine mountings 22A917 & 22A1018 these are in stock
Below is a practical guide to the three mount options that are available at TC Motorsport, plus a home-workshop fitting guide.
The 3 engine mount options available
1) Genuine MiniSpares U.K. Engine Mounts — 21A1902GEN
This is the “do it once, do it right” option.
What makes it different
- Built to original drawings/spec, with emphasis on correct rubber compound and bonding to the steel plates in the correct angles and shape.
- Mini Spares specifically notes the poor quality of some past copies (ie there hole alignment and rubber quality), which is why the genuine mount cost that little bit more.
Who it suits
- Owners chasing best vibration damping and a more “factory” feel.
- Cars where you want to reduce the chance of excessive engine movement (which can contribute to contact or damage around intake/exhaust components).
Fitment notes
- Manual gearbox cars only
2) “Easy fit” Captive/Castellated Nut Engine Mount — 21A1902ST
If you’ve ever fitted engine mount to a Mini or Moke while on jack stands, you immediately understand the appeal: the captive nuts make life easier.
Why people buy them
- We describe these as having castellated nuts fitted, making fitment easier when bolting to the subframe while you’re under your vehicle.
Trade-off
- Convenience is the headline feature. If your priority is the best rubber quality/vibration control, many owners still prefer a genuine-spec rubber mount.
3) Budget Non-Genuine Engine Mounts — 21A1902MS
This is the value option: gets the job done and is a common replacement choice for worn or collapsed mounts (especially on daily drivers), but it’s usually not as good as genuine for vibration control after many years.
Trade-off
- These aren’t made with the precision like the genuine mounts.
Fitment notes
- Manual Gearbox cars only
Don’t get caught out: Manual vs Automatic
These mounts are for manual gearbox cars only. Automatics use a different engine mounting available as 22A917 and 22A1018
Do you need the fitting kit?
Engine Mount Fitting Kit 21A1902FK
This Fitting Kit: is not essential if your original bolts/fasteners are in great condition, but in the real world using stretched bolts, rounded heads makes installation difficult and re-using old spring washers is a recipe for disaster.
- Old bolts are often rounded, stretched, rusty, mismatched, or have tired spring washers
- fresh hardware makes the job faster and helps prevent loosening future failures.
