PRODUCT OVERVIEW

Replacement 2nd gear to suit Mini and Moke pre A+ 4 synchro gearboxes fitted with the 14mm main shaft.

Second gear is one of the most commonly worn and weakest gears in the Mini and Moke gearbox, especially in cars that have had years of hard use, poor oil maintenance, worn bearings or incorrect gearbox assembly. If your gearbox is apart, this is one of the key gears worth inspecting carefully before reassembly.

A worn or damaged 2nd gear can cause poor gear selection, noise, jumping out of gear or premature gearbox failure. Replacing it during a rebuild can save the trouble of pulling the gearbox back apart later.

IMPORTANT TECH NOTE

When stripping a Mini or Moke gearbox, take care when locking the gearbox into two gears to undo the large mainshaft and 1st motion shaft nuts.

Some older Haynes manuals advise locking the gearbox into 2nd and 3rd gear. We do not recommend this, as it can easily damage or strip the laygear, 2nd gear or 3rd gear.

The safer method is to lock the gearbox into 1st and 4th gear when undoing these nuts.

REBUILD ADVICE

If you are already undertaking a gearbox strip down, always inspect the laygear, synchro hubs, baulk rings, bearings, selector forks and main shaft condition at the same time. Replacing one worn gear while leaving damaged related parts in place can shorten the life of the rebuild.
